Albany County Facilities - Public Access Update

Albany County Re-Opening Phases – Current Status

On May 5th, 2020 the Albany County Commissioner’s adopted resolution 2020-15 which identified phases for re-opening county facilities to the public. We are currently operating at phase two, which is as follows:

  • Transmission within the community is stabilizing or decreasing with no confirmed exposure within communal settings with the potential for a rapid increase in suspected cases.

  • Directives from Governor or State Health Officer placing limits on public gatherings and limited opening of community businesses.

  • County Government offices open to the public by appointment or limited public interactions determined by department heads.
  • All meetings to be held using the CDC distancing guidelines.
  • All County Boards including the County Commissioners and County Planning Commission shall meet by electronic means allowing public access and comment through electronic means.
  • Offices will follow social distancing using CDC guidelines.

Facemask Requirement for Public Business

It’s important to know that at this time all county facilities will require the public to use facemasks or face covering if they are attending a scheduled meeting or doing any business at county facilities, this includes Albany County District Court. Please keep an eye out for signage or additional instructions. As a reminder, there is a drop box located inside the building on the south side of the courthouse on the 2nd floor. Some County offices can still serve the public’s needs by mail or online as well.  We will send out an update if we change phases or get additional instructions from the Governor or State/County health officers.

Albany County District Court:

For the remainder of May 2020, the Albany County District Court will continue to hold all non-essential hearings by video and telephone, if possible.  However, any required hearings and trials may necessitate "in-person" attendance by parties and attorneys.  The Court will handle each matter on a case-by-case basis to ensure statutory and constitutional compliance.   We expect all those present in person at the District Court to abide by CDC Guidelines; the mandates of the Albany County Commissioners; and the orders of Governor Gordon and State and local Health officers regarding "best practices" to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including: the wearing of masks (if appropriate), appropriate hand washing and use of sanitizers, social distancing, limitation on those present in-person to only necessary parties, and other prevention measures.  The District Court encourages attorneys and litigants/parties to be in contact (in advance, via telephone) with our office and the Office of the Clerk of the District Court if there are any questions about requirements and expectations.  The District Court, Judge Kricken, and her staff are doing their best to maintain "business as usual" during this time so that cases are not delayed unnecessarily.  Decisions concerning the month of June will be made once additional information is available.
